UCLA's Urban Educator Network (UEN)
The Urban Educator Network (UEN) provides support, professional development,
and mentoring opportunities for graduates of UCLA's
Teacher Education Program. The UEN is a part of the Urban
Teacher Education Collaborative (UTEC) and is directed by Eloise Lopez
Metcalfe and Jody Priselac. The following programs comprise UEN:
Inquiry Groups
Inquiry groups are held throughout the year and provide an arena
where graduates can share their teaching experiences and struggles. Participants
assist each other in making sense of their work and in trying out new ways
of becoming social justice educators. For more information, contact Yvonne
Ballesteros at ballesteros@gseis.ucla.edu.
Voices for Change
Once a month UCLA brings together teams of two or more teachers from
various school sites to meet and explore issues of collaboration as well as
to discuss and share challenges they face at their respective schools. For
more information, contact Stella Bruno at sbruno@gseis.ucla.edu.
CIRCLE Advisory Groups
The Consortium of Urban Schools Involved in Renewal and Committed
to Leadership in Education (CIRCLE) consists of three regional advisory groups
that examine local issues relating to urban schooling. CIRCLE Advisory Groups
engage a wide range of stakeholders, including district and school administrators,
teachers, parents, community members, and UCLA Faculty Advisors. For more
information, contact Annamarie Francois at francois@gseis.ucla.edu.
UEN Fellowship Program
The UEN Fellowship program selects UEN Fellows to engage in research,
mentoring, instructional case writing, and other professional growth opportunities
that will prepare them for leadership roles in field-based teacher education.
UEN Fellows are paired with UCLA faculty who oversee their work and progress.
For more information, contact Eloise Lopez Metcalfe at elm@ucla.edu
or Jody Priselac at priselac@gseis.ucla.edu.
Professional Development Scholarships
UEN offers professional growth opportunities, including, grant-writing workshops,
National Board Certification, seminars with the California Subject Matter
Projects, and other topics where educators come together to explore urban
education issues. Scholarships are available to UEN members who demonstrate
how particular workshops or courses fit into their overall plan for professional
growth. For more information, contact Stella Bruno at sbruno@gseis.ucla.edu.
Teaching to Change LA
Teaching
to Change LA, an online journal of the Institute for Democracy, Education
and Access, brings together teachers, researchers, students, community members,
parents and other activists. Teaching
to Change LA aims to be a vital public space where multiple constituencies
confront the most critical issues that schools and communities face across
greater Los Angeles. For more information, contact Solange Belcher at tcla@gseis.ucla.edu.
Recruitment Efforts
Alumni are very important models and sources of information for prospective
students. For more information, contact Sheila Lane at slane@ucla.edu.
