UFS Apprenticeship Program
Field supervisors support Masters students in the Teacher Education Program
by observing and coaching students teaching in local urban schools, working
with faculty to help teach core seminars, and supporting students as they
create their Master’s portfolios. Currently, twenty-three University
Field Supervisors are employed in the UCLA TEP program. Field supervisors
work inside an apprenticeship model where they are encouraged to share professional
responsibilities with faculty members throughout the year. They not only contribute
to the development of students, but are also supported in their own development
as high quality teacher educators.
The UFS meet as a group twice a month in order to reflect on their work in
the field and examine dimensions of teacher education and social justice research.
These meetings, called the University Field Supervisor Seminar, provide a
place to talk thoughtfully about teacher education, social justice and the
work supervisors are doing; a place to provide technical support for field
supervisors to do their work well; and a personal and collective support system.
